Ilustration Supposing Books Shadows in Paradise

After years of hiding and surviving near-death in a concentration camp, Ross is finally safe. Now living in New York City among old friends, far from Europe's chilling atrocities, Ross soon meets Natasha, a beautiful model and fellow migre, a warm heart to help him forget his cold memories. Yet even as the war draws to its violent close, Ross cannot find peace. Demons still pursue him. Whether they are ghosts from the past or the guilt of surviving, he does not know. Critique Of Books Shadows in Paradise
Shadows in Paradise: http://readwithstyle.wordpress.com/20...Remarque is comparable to no one when it comes to the immigrants soul. Being himself an immigrant from Germany and having been persecuted numerous times for his writings, he understands the immigrants dilemma a longing towards your country, whose people have turned into murderers, and a clear understanding that in order to live you have to flee this country.Shadows in Paradise follows the life of several German immigrants in the US,

Not as good as some of the other novels by Remarque, like Heaven Has No Favorites and A Time to Love and a Time to Die. I couldn't connect with the characters, and overall I wasn't interested in their emotions or their fate.

I consider Remarque as one of the leading writers of his period. His style is deep, thoughtful, expressionist. His style is subtle, and gives the reader to figure out his conclusions for himself. I take great joy in reading Remarque, as I can connect with the characters, resting when reading his books.I would give the book five stars for it's style, if it wasn't for the rape scene mid-book. I hate things like this put into literature, into filmmaking, et cetera, for reasons like cheap catching

I find this book very hard to review. On one hand, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about 80% of it. But whenever I think about it on a grander scale, I feel kind of disappointed. The book certainly has no plot, but it doesnt even really have a progression from beginning to end. Im not even really sure how the main character, Ross, has changed. There are about six or seven storylines, each of which ends at the end of the book to varying degrees of satisfaction. I thought (view spoiler)[Kahns

Re-read this year. Still as powerful...

If it is the first Remarques book one reads, i believe, he will enjoy it and will be pushed to further explore the author. As for me, it is not of his strongest ones. However, I was ones again touched by the characters and their stories, as well as by the emotional ending.
