Amid an inferno of explosives on a deadly minefield in the Korean War, a four-legged Marine proved to be a heroic force of nature. She moved headstrong up and down steep, smoky terrain that no man could travail confidently. In a single day, this small Mongolian mare made fifty-one round-trips carrying nearly five tons of explosives to various gun sites. Sergeant Reckless was her name, and she was the horse renowned for carrying wounded soldiers on and off the battlefield and making solo trips across combat zones to deliver supplies. A widely celebrated national hero, Reckless was first featured in 1954 in the Saturday Evening Post and more recently in 1997 when LIFE magazine published an edition lauding history’s one hundred all-time heroes. Equine enthusiast Robin Hutton learned about Sergeant Reckless and spearheaded the effort to commission a monument at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle (Quantico), VA. In July of 2013, the statue was unveiled. A second monument is planned for Camp Pendleton, where Reckless lived out her days and is buried. Hutton has now written the first-ever full biography of Sergeant Reckless, who earned two Purple Hearts for her heroic efforts (among other military decorations). Hutton has spoken with the Marines who fought alongside Reckless and tells the complete and captivating tale of how a would-be Korean racehorse became one of the greatest Marine wartime heroes. Sgt. Reckless brings the legend back to life more than half a century later.Mention Books During Sgt. Reckless: America's War Horse

The Military should create a medal for bravery and valor above and beyond duty such as the bronze and silver star for the animals in the service. Also an equivalent of the Medal of Honor should be created and Sgt. Reckless its first recipient. It is obvious this book was well researched. The author interviewed hundreds of Marines and other people whose lives were touched by Reckless and incorporated the wonderful stories into this book. Sgt. She was bred as a racehorse, and owned Huk Moon (a pseudonym), the young jockey who rode her. He had owned her dam, Ah-Chim-Hai, or Flame of the Morning. He was given her as a gift for his many acts of bravery and kindness during World War II. Because he loved her so much, when she was finally bred, he named her offspring Flame of the Morning also. But when her mother
Without a doubt, I loved the feel-good story of a Mongolian mare that was born to be a Korean racehorse but ended up an integral part of an American Marine platoon, hauling ammunition into battle unguided and unaided. Reckless was definitely a horse of note, and I loved listening to the stories of her personality and grit. A nonfiction account of a soldier-horse? I'm in.That said, this book went on and on and on. It could have been half the length and just as good (or better, with some editing).
Oh, how to write this book up? It was okay. I realize that the author put a lot of heart and soul into this book, into telling the story of this remarkable horse. But you have to want to really read this. It's not for everyone. The book tells the story of Reckless, a Korean horse purchased by a U.S. Army officer to help his soldiers transport munitions to the front lines during the Korean war. The author states that this horse was a war hero during the Korean War and was recognized in Life
Admittedly, I probably shouldn't have read this directly after finishing Laura Hillenbrand's masterful WWII tome "Unbroken," but I did and I can't take that back. As a result, I spent my entire reading of this book thinking about how much better I would have liked it if Hillenbrand had gotten to tell the story. To be clear, I reserve no critical commentary for the tale itself, which is mesmerizing and a tearjerker in places. It's also so fantastic and unbelievable that you know it can't be
Lucky me, I was able to get an advance copy of this all-American war horse story...and then I got to meet the author! I was up half the night my first day in this book. It is that good. The author does a great job of portraying the character of a Noble animal during terrible circumstances.
